The global fragrance market is worth more than fifty billion dollars annually, and approximately none of the brands that dominate it were built in West Africa. The conglomerates that control fine fragrance — LVMH, Puig, Interparfums — have set the terms of luxury scent for decades: French heritage, European aesthetics, mass-market production behind a bespoke veneer. Ernestina Yaa A. Kobi looked at this landscape and decided that what it was missing was not another French-influenced brand. It was a fragrance house rooted in Ghanaian identity, one that applied the principles of artisanal perfumery — handcraft, customisation, intentional luxury — from a West African foundation.
The name is the first argument the brand makes. In Twi, SANHWE translates to “Take Another Look” — a brief delivered in three syllables, an instruction to slow down and reconsider. In a market saturated with celebrity endorsements and algorithmic recommendation engines, this is a contrarian position: the invitation to notice, to be noticed, and to choose a fragrance on the basis of something more personal than what is trending this season. The name is also a philosophy. Kobi is asking her customers to look again at what luxury means, where it can originate, and whose cultural vocabulary is worth building it from.
As Founder and Perfumer, Kobi runs SANHWE as a genuinely artisanal operation. Every fragrance is handcrafted, and the house’s signature offering is the personalised scent experience — a process that transforms the selection of a perfume from a retail transaction into an intimate creative collaboration. This is the kind of service that has historically required a trip to Paris or London, reserved for a small segment of the global market willing to pay for true bespoke. Kobi has established it in Accra, operating across both SANHWE Scentuary and SANHWE Fragrances, serving clients who want a scent that is unmistakably theirs.
The Vision
Kobi’s ambition for SANHWE extends beyond individual commissions. She is building a recognised West African fragrance house — one that earns its place alongside the world’s best not through imitation but through the authentic specificity of its own cultural foundation. The scent you encounter from SANHWE should be unmistakably of this place, made by these hands, for this purpose. That specificity is its luxury.
The Business
SANHWE Scentuary is an artisanal fragrance house producing high-quality, customized scents. The business operates on a philosophy of intentional luxury: each fragrance is crafted to evoke something specific and personal for the wearer. From signature scents for individuals to curated collections for events, the house delivers what mass-market brands cannot — a scent that is entirely, unmistakably yours.
The company has carved a niche in a market where the appetite for artisanal, locally produced luxury goods is growing rapidly. With operations spanning SANHWE Scentuary and SANHWE Fragrances, Kobi has built a brand that commands the kind of lingering second glance her company name promises.
